OVERVIEW
Health Affairs - the nation's leading journal of health policy thought and research - presented its new program Health Equity Fellowship for Trainees.
The Fellowship was part of Health Affairs' national initiative to advance racial equity in health policy and health services scholarly publishing. Its objective was to value and increase the quality and quantity of equity-related research published in Health Affairs authored by members of racial and ethnic groups that have historically been underrepresented in scholarly publishing. The objective was to offer fellows multi-layered mentorship from experienced Health Affairs authors and editorial staff for one-year (from January 2022 to December 2022). Mentors work with fellows to make manuscript submissions by fellows more likely to be published in the journal.
PROGRAM BENEFITS FOR FELLOWS
- One-on-one mentorship from health equity researchers who have published in Health Affairs
- One-on-one guidance from Health Affairs editorial staff to increase the likelihood that the fellow's submitted manuscript will be accepted for publication in Health Affairs or another journal
- Publication of at least one Health Affairs Forefront post relating to their subject area and/or experience with the fellowship
- Opportunity to serve as a brand advocate for Health Affairs
- Opportunities to expand their professional networks through engagement with other fellows and peer health services researchers
- Access to materials, seminars, and other special educational opportunities designed to support their research and career advancement
APPLICATION ELIGIBILITY
Eligibility requirements for Health Affairs' Health Equity Fellowship for Trainees:
- Be a graduate-level (masters, PhD, MD, JD, etc.) student, postdoctoral researcher, or early career researcher who is no more than seven years outside of having earned your graduate degree
- Identify as American Indian/Native Alaskan, African American/Black, Asian American/Pacific Islander, and Hispanic/Latino (applications from minority-serving institutions such as Tribal Colleges and Universities, Non-tribal American Indian/Native Alaskan-Serving Institutions, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Hispanic-Serving Institutions, and Asian American and Pacific Islander-Serving Institutions with programs related to public health and health policy were strongly encouraged)
- Be engaged in health services research that advances racial health equity among historically marginalized populations
- Be working on a research project at a U.S.-based institution or organization that is within one year of being submitted for publishing
APPLICATION PERIOD
The application period for the 2022 Health Equity Fellowship for Trainees was from August 10 to September 13, 2021. Items required for the application included:
- One-page cover letter
- Abstract of proposed manuscript (draft manuscript accepted, but not required)
- Enrollment verification (for students and postdocs only)
- One recommendation letter from someone with whom the applicant has engaged in research
