WASHINGTON DC, USA -- HEALTHCARE UPDATE NEWS SERVICE™ -- MAY 14, 2010: HIT Arkansas, www.HITArkansas.com, a division of Arkansas Foundation for Medical Care℠, www.afmc.org, is the second Regional Extension Center (REC) to offer HIT and EHR training from Health IT Certification.

HITArkansas is the federally designated Health Information Technology Regional Extension Center (HITREC) for the state of Arkansas. HITArkansas is part of a new effort by the federal government to increase the use of health information technology nationwide by offering guidance, technical assistance and financial incentives to health care providers who want to make the transition to electronic health records (EHRs).

John Robbins, interim president and chief executive officer of the Arkansas Foundation for Medical Care, said that AFMC is pleased to offer Health IT Certification’s online approach to quickly train staff and physician practice personnel in HIT, HIE and EHR.  He also noted that AFMC’s past experience with this program has been positive and effective. “Our staff members who have taken these courses in the past found them to be very beneficial,” Robbins said. “We look forward to working together with Health IT Certification to provide this affordable training opportunity."

Several RECs have indicated a strong interest in taking advantage of the "boots on the ground" readiness of these existing, high quality online courses and the low price point. CPHIT and/or CPEHR certified professional have indicated the extreme relevance of these courses to the RECs' education needs. The fact that they are offered online makes it very attractive for meeting the needs of the RECs in training large numbers of people. The discounted price offers RECs an opportunity to cost effectively deliver this nationally recognized training program to their local communities online at a very cost effective price point.

More than 2,000 individuals have taken advantage of HITC training since 2005. About 15 percent of the attendees have been physicians. More than half of quality improvement organizations have sent staff to this training under the DOQ-IT program and in anticipation of ramping up for REC work.
