ROCKVILLE, MARYLAND, USA -- HEALTHCARE UPDATE NEWS SERVICE™ -- OCTOBER 29, 2008: The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) is sponsoring a free conference, Patient Experience & Patient Safety Culture — the 11th CAHPS® and 1st SOPS User Group Meeting on December 3-5, 2008, at the Doubletree Paradise Valley Resort in Scottsdale, Arizona.

This free conference is intended for:

  • Users of CAHPS surveys and products, especially the CAHPS Hospital Survey and the CAHPS Clinician and Group Survey;
  • Users of the AHRQ Surveys on Patient Safety Culture (SOPS) for hospitals, nursing homes, and medical offices;
  • Individuals interested in learning about these instruments and associated reporting tools; and
  • Individuals interested in using these surveys to improve patients’ experiences.

FEATURED CAHPS SPEAKERS INCLUDE:

Elizabeth Goldstein, Ph.D., Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), will provide an update on the CAHPS Hospital Survey and the CAHPS Home Health Care Survey.

Elizabeth Hoy, M.H.A., American College of Surgeons, will discuss a new surgical care patient survey.

Carrie Brady, J.D., Vice President Quality, Planetree, will describe lessons from high-performing hospitals.

John Co, M.D., M.P.H. Massachusetts General Hospital, will discuss the use of computer tablets for collecting experience of care surveys for hospital patients at discharge.

Dale Shaller, M.P.A., Shaller Consulting, will moderate a session on real world experiences implementing the CAHPS Clinician & Group Survey. Other panelists include Melinda Karp, Massachusetts Health Quality Partners; Robert Krughoff, Center for the Study of Services; and Heather Britt, Allina Hospitals & Clinics.

CAHPS Consortium Members, including individuals from AHRQ, Yale, RAND, and Westat, will make presentations at sessions throughout the meeting, including the preconference “CAHPS College” (an afternoon of sessions designed for new as well as experienced users of CAHPS.


AHRQ SURVEYS ON PATIENT SAFETY CULTURE WILL FEATURE:

Introduction of two new SOPS surveys for medical offices and nursing homes.

Discussion of patient safety improvement initiatives made by hospitals using their safety culture survey results to improve patient safety.

Results from the latest Hospital SOPS comparative database, which hospitals can use to compare their individual hospital survey results.

Presentations by international users of the Hospital SOPS and discussion about plans for an international comparative database.
